It’s a real issue for sure. I think the only way to combat things like this will be for cameras to implement something similar to code signing signatures or SSL. that is, each camera is shipped with a public/private key pair that sign the digital photo/video with a private key and can be verified against a database of public keys hosted by the camera manufacturer. iPhones could implement this feature today easily. That doesn’t mean your personal info has to be tied to the signature, it just verifies the digital output can be tied directly to a real camera.
I’m a software engineer and I used to work on a Public Key infrastructure team so I know this is a feasible solution. Sadly, most of congress doesn’t understand these technical solutions that exist. It would be great if we could get a new department dedicated to proposing technical solutions to congress so they can properly legislate to fight the headaches AI will cause
